New Delhi: The union government has instructed state
administration in order to convince the local residents of Niddody, in
Mangalore taluk of Karnataka as it has finalized the proposal to set up
mega thermal plant there.
The need of the hour is to hold talks with the local peasants over the proposed thermal plants in their neighbourhood. The state government has to take proper steps in this regard. The central energy department fact finding team advised the state government in acquiring fertile farmlands for this purpose.
Mangalore Electricity Supply Company (MESCOM) has come forward to set up ultra mega power plant with a capacity to generate 4,000 megawatts of electricity. The local peasants of Niddody, Badagamijar and Tenkamijar staged struggle against the proposed power plant in their fertile farmlands. The locals staged protest when the officers of Central Energy Authority, Power Finance Corporation and state government visited the localities on May 16.
The officers team advised the union government about the opposition of local peasants in acquiring their fertile farmland that necessitated the state government to hold talks with agitating peasants fraternity.
The farmers oppose the proposed thermal plant in their midst, because the power plant set up by Udupi Power Plant Corporation Limited (UPCL) in Nandikoor, Udupi district has caused major environmental destruction and the state government has not adequately compensated and rehabilitated the families who were displaced in this case
