Bangalore: The government had pulled out all stops to
ensure the ambitious project of 30kg of rice at Re 1 per kg is
successful, in its very first month, the cheap rice scheme has got off
to a good start.
The
target is 87 lakh BPL families in the state. The scheme was launched
only after an adequate quantity of rice was procured and transported to
godowns.
There have not been any problems, be it in providing the promised quantity or quality. However, there were stray incidents of diversion of rice by distributors and demands for more money (Rs 1.50 per kg) by fair price shop operators. Realizing the importance of the scheme, officials took quick action against the offenders.
"The scheme is successful. We are ready to bear the additional subsidy to ensure the poor get two meals a day", a beaming chief minister Siddaramaiah declared in the assembly. The exact quantity of rice distributed will be clear in a couple of days.
The cheap rice scheme has also pushed up the number of ration cards in Karnataka. Officials are still processing lakhs of BPL card requests, and more than 15,000 cards have been issued.
